I'm happy to announce that Infinity Ward decided that European Custom Maps can enter the CoD4 Community Mapping Contest.
It helped that some of the best mappers live at this side of the ocean. :)
So because of some legal issues that needs to be done before the custom maps can be officially hand over to IW they decided to extend the competition date.
New last-day date is not set yet.
Next to getting a lot of credit for the winning custom maps there will be some great prizes to win.
We will report about this FIRST TIME GLOBAL CoD4 Community Mapping Contest when the official submission rules get announced !

I have some great PS3 news for everyone! We have hammered out the details for the upcoming DLC and will be releasing the new Variety Map Pack on PS3 in North America on Thursday, April 24. In addition, We’re also really excited that the Map Pack passed Sony Europe certification and will be propped on the PlayStation Network on May 1.

North American players will be able to play the new maps against members of the Infinity Ward team on Friday, April 25 from 5 PM to 8 PM PDT.
We’ll also be hosting another special Double XP and Play With Devs event for our worldwide / European users specifically. Today the release of the new Variety Map Pack DLC for Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare became a fact.

Call of Duty 4 Variety Map Pack will cost 800 MS Points to download.

Game Downloads From Xbox LIVE Marketplace Xbox LIVE® Marketplace offers tons of all-new content for your existing Xbox 360 and Xbox games. Whether it's new multiplayer maps for your favorite shooter, extra cars for a race game, or new quests for that role-playing game, you'll find it on Marketplace. Some content packs are free, while others may set you back a few Microsoft Points. Check out the latest extra for your favorite games and play them in a whole new way.
With the release of Call of Duty® 4: Modern Warfare™Game of the Year Edition in april 2008 a token to download the Variety Map Pack wil be given extra for free.
When loading PC CoD4 it can happen it suddenly goes to a black screen, and then an error pops up saying "directx has encountered an unrecoverable error, check the readme for possible solutions".
But the readme doesnt say much. And updating directx with the files from the disc dont help.
There are now 2 possibilities why this error pops up.
In READ MORE you can find out what to do.
1. XFIRE is the problem.
You have to disable the "In-game" part of xfire for cod4

2. MODTOOLS is the problem.
Normally installing the direct x drivers does the trick or try reinstalling CoD4.
When there is a more news about this error and best fix, we will post it here.
Just a heads up that it looks like Marketplace is back on it’s feet and running as normal. You should have no problem buying or redeeming the new Variety Map Pack. If you tried yesterday when it was down and received an Invalid Code error, be sure to retry today with the same code. If you received the Error Message that your code was already used while it was down yesterday, just attempt to re-download it via the “Download Maps” option in-game or on the marketplace.

Meanwhile, we’ve been preparing for the launch of the new maps on the PS3 as well via PSN. So we should have details on that in the near future (hopefully next week). I’m in the process of setting up some Play with the Devs games as well as looking into other similar things we can just like the launch of the map packs on Xbox 360.
Please don’t feel ignored if every platform isn’t mentioned in each post, a lot goes into every release (especially something as big as a map pack release), so typically when I post I’m focused at the subject at hand specifically.
Luckily though it’s getting to that time for the PS3 to be the focus for a while with the launch of the Game of the Year Edition on PS3, the Variety Map Pack hitting PSN, and setting up some launch weekend events for you guys when the maps hit.
As I said we are getting close to having official details on exact release dates and info on the GOTY Edition for PS3 hitting stores worldwide, as well as when you can expect the Map Pack to be up on PSN for download. That’s my main focus for next week.
On the PC side of things the Patch is in queue to finish internal QA for release. The Community Mapping Content has come to an end and we’ll be putting out an open call for all the maps you guys have created to be submitted as well as releasing details on the prizing and how the winning maps may be showing up. We have some awesome prizing I’m anxious to finalize and announce to you guys. I’ve been keeping tabs on the Beta / Released maps in the Mapping forums on Infinityward.com and there are some great ones.
In addition to that details are being finalized as to getting the map pack to the PC users as well. I can’t speak specifics just yet as everything is being cemented now, but it sounds like good news.
Let me know if you guys have any questions or concerns in the meantime, but it sounds like next week is going to be the most informative when it comes to what’s shaping up on the PS3 and PC side of things.

The new March 2008 issue of Game Developer magazine has an exclusive creator-written article on the making of Infinity Ward's Call Of Duty 4.

The postmortem, written by Infinity Ward's Zeid Rieke and Michael Boon, is described by the Game Developer editors as follows:
"Call of Duty 4 is one of the most critically acclaimed games of 2007, and the authors make no secret of their pride in the product. There are many important lessons in here, from sticking to your ideals for a game (even if you aren't completely in charge of the series), to maintaining focus when alluring new IPs loom."
The Evolution Of CoD4
In this first extract, the Infinity Ward team discuss the start of the project, and some of the thought processes the team went through when creating the highly rated title, which Activision is claiming is the best-selling game of 2007 at 7 million copies:
"Call of Duty 4 was Infinity Ward's third Call of Duty game, and as such we approached it knowing we needed to do something fresh. We don't want to pigeonhole ourselves any more than we have to, and many members of the team came off Call of Duty 2 promising never to work on another WWII game.
We tried several different directions, many of which were failures, but the ultimate result was the best game any of us have ever worked on. As a game development experience, it seemed to go so smoothly that it was difficult to come up with five things that went wrong...
Coming off Call of Duty 2, we knew we wanted to do something different for our next game. We don't agree with some critics who say that WWII as a genre is dead, but we couldn't muster the same passion for the subject that we had in our first three WWII games (Call of Duty 1 and 2 and Medal of Honor: Allied Assault).
We had a few ideas that we wanted to do and eventually settled on two. One was Modern Warfare, and the other was a new project."
Infinity Ward's Second Team Dilemma
In this second extract, the Infinity Ward duo discuss one of the items that needed to change through the development of the title, referencing a second parallel game team that was eventually folded into the CoD 4 team:
"At the start of development on Call of Duty 4 we tried to branch into two teams. We started a second project with a small prototype team, intending on shipping it a year after Call of Duty 4.
Our intentions were to create a new risky IP, which would allow us to stretch our creative muscles. We are determined not to stagnate creatively and just make clones of our previous games indefinitely. Growing a second team was one idea for how to do achieve this.
Almost immediately, the two projects began to compete with each other for ideas and people. We hired extra people, including some seasoned leads, so that neither project would be understaffed. As time went by, we were aware of the difficulties, but we initially focused on how hard it was for the team on the new game, failing to notice the damage that the second project was doing to Call of Duty 4.
The area hit hardest was the game design. Our design leadership was distracted by the second project and put a lot of their creative energy into it. This meant that problems like ['What Went Wrong' reason referenced in the full article] "too much desert" were allowed to linger for longer than they should have."
To PC Demo, Or Not To PC Demo?
Finally as part of these extracts, the team discuss what didn't quite go right with the PC demo of Call Of Duty 4, contrasting it with the Xbox 360 beta version, which helped build anticipation in a much stronger fashion:
"Our pre-release buzz was stronger than it had ever been for any of our previous games; we were getting tons of press despite it being a very crowded holiday season for games; our trailers and other videos on the internet were getting amazing numbers of viewers.
Despite all this, we did as we had done with all our previous games-about a month before release we put out a single player demo on PC consisting of one of our missions.
The reaction to the demo completely blindsided us. Our fans were disappointed. The demo was "more of the same," or even worse, just "meh"-not even worth talking about. After a couple of days we realized what went wrong. Anticipation was so high that we couldn't possibly live up to expectations.
Also a huge part of the appeal of our single player game is the gameplay variety. Playing Call of Duty 4, you almost never do the same thing twice. That makes it impossible to select just one mission to represent the entire game. Instead we had to choose what part of the game to represent with the demo. If we had chosen one of our radically different missions we would have alienated fans of the previous games, so we chose a level that we felt represented our "core gameplay," which is fairly similar to the core gameplay of Call of Duty 2.
Lastly we had to worry about story spoilers, as most of our favorite missions also advance the story. Giving away one of those as a demo mission was out of the question, as we didn't want to wreck the game for players.
Given all these constraints, looking at the examples of other games which managed to build tons of pre-release buzz like Gears of War and Halo 2 and 3 without doing pre-release demos, we should have realized that a pre-release demo would be likely to hurt us rather than help us.
In hindsight, the PC demo was a distinctly different case from the Xbox 360 multiplayer beta. The beta was released earlier and was responsible for much of our buzz, it was much more novel on the Xbox, where gamers are not as used to free content, and it showcased a large amount of what was new in Call of Duty 4. The beta also played a vital role in helping us ship a polished game."
Conclusion: Game Developer's March 2008 Issue
The full postmortem, including much more insight into the critically acclaimed game's development, with plenty more 'What Went Right' and 'What Went Wrong' reasoning, is now available in the March 2008 issue of Game Developer magazine.
The issue also includes a number of other major features, including the recently revealed Top 50 Developers countdown and a fascinating technical article on ambient occlusive crease shading - plus tool reviews, special sections, and regular technical columns from Bungie's Steve Theodore, Neversoft co-founder Mick West, Lucasarts' Jesse Harlin, and Sinistar creator Noah Falstein.
Yearly print and digital subscriptions to Game Developer are now available, and all digital subscriptions now include web-browsable and downloadable PDF versions of the magazine back to May 2004, as well as the digital version of the Game Career Guide special issue.
In addition the March 2008 issue of Game Developer is available in digital form (viewable in a web browser, and with an associated downloadable PDF), and as a physical single-issue copy.

According to Dutch retailer Bart Smit, the rumored price cut of the Euro Xbox 360 is happening!!
As previously speculated the Xbox 360 Elite has dropped from €549.95 to €399.95.
The Pro Console (which includes Viva Pinata and Forza Motorsport 2) goes from €399.95 to €299.95.
While the Arcade bundle is down from €279.95 to €199.95.

At €199.95 the Xbox 360 Arcade would become the cheapest console of this generation in Europe (!), edging out the Nintendo Wii which retails for €249.95.
The Microsoft camp has stated that the key to better sales in 2008 is the European market, where Microsoft is forced to fend off the strong PlayStation brand awareness and the popularity of the Nintendo Wii.
However, considering Xbox 360's popularity in the Western market we don't recommend North American buyers begin holding their breath for a price-drop just yet.

The Call of Duty 4 title update for the Xbox 360 is now live. Fresh out of internal testing and recently stamped with a Microsoft Certification, the new feature patch contains lots of new stuff including Kill Cams and Host Migration.
This news courtesy of Infinity Ward’s Communication Relations Manager via the Infinity Ward forums. When you sign into Xbox Live with COD4 you will receive a prompt for it. The PS3 version of the patch is “currently finishing up it’s final internal testing and should be heading off to Sony for it’s own certification in the near future.”

Community member JD from Call of Duty HQ has released v0.6 of the very useful ModernRcon tool.
ModernRcon v0.6 is finally here...However, it isn't what was initially planned to be. Rather than including Auto-kick features in v0.6, they will come in v0.7. Instead, version 0.6 has a couple small additions, but a slew of fixes that were important.
Version 0.6 Changes:
• Custom Maps support
• Server Password control (Basic Settings tab)
• Players with negative score will now show in the list!
• PBUCON Error 106 fix - languages with the ú character can now monitor chat!
• Windows XP display issues
• More... See README for full list!
You may have also noticed you got an alert popup if you were using ModernRcon v0.5 when the new version was released. That's the auto-updater I added recently. As of now, it will not auto-patch, but I hope to have an auto-patch feature before I finish development on ModernRcon.

- Over the years war games came and went, I usually didn’t pay much attention to them. Not often enough do we get a game that utterly blows our minds and makes us come crawling back for more, especially with a sequel. Luckily this year we got Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. Developed by Infinity Ward and published by Activision, this first person shooter (FPS) is the first of the Call of Duty franchise to be placed in modern times (hence the name, Modern Warfare) and while most fans of the series thought this might be the end of their beloved Call of Duty (COD) series, it was more of a rebirth into the mainstream gaming spotlight.
As the first COD game to take place outside of World War II, Modern Warfare is set in today's world, and you play as three separate characters. You begin your training as a British special operative in Russia, then move to an American Force Recon operative in the middle east and even play as a flashback of Captain Price (from Call of Duty 1 and 2) as a lowly frontline soldier in the Ukraine fifteen years earlier. As you progress through the game, you find yourself bouncing between these three characters.
The game begins with high energy gun firing, explosions and people dying all around you. The sense of action and chaos can seem overwhelming at first, but hey, it's war. The game is intense beyond words, and you will feel the adrenaline immediately.
The graphics are as realistic as they can be without actually being there. From extremely detailed level and landscape design to the realistic and elaborate models, this game will take your breath away. You may be on the offensive, pushing enemies back and seeing the way they move and hide for cover while other times you are being pushed back yourself and as you hide behind a ravaged crate you can see bullet sparks whizzing by, allies flying overhead due to grenade attacks and bullet holes coming through the walls progressively closer to yourself. The player HUD doesn’t clutter the screen and gives just enough information to keep you aware of your surroundings without distracting you in the heat of battle. The continuously high frame-rate never so much as flickers. During one part of the game, you control a helicopter. My jaw literally dropped at the animation and detail given to this in-air fire fight. I felt like I was watching a live feed from an army report. The weapons are all modeled after modern army issued weaponry. You can watch how the gun fires and understand the real life mechanics of guns from the comfort of your seat (or at least the edge of it). At other parts of the game, story takes precedence and you're thrown into a very intense, detailed and emotional cinematic experience unlike any other realistic game out there. The colours are crisp and are perfect for the type of game Modern Warfare aims to be.
The sound effects, musical undertones and use of voice in this game are equally amazing compared to the visual stimulation to the eyes. Infinity Ward utilizes the Dolby Digital sound in this war game help bring the hard gripping, teeth clenching, sweat dripping virtual battle to life. If you have a surround sound setup with subwoofer, this game will have you on edge; as you creep towards your objective you will hear screams from enemies and allies alike, mortar shells falling all around you, commands being shouted, and quite possibly the most intense aspect of this game, you will hear bullets coming at you from all directions. The use of head set communication in online play is also great. Communication is crucial for planning attacks and notifying allies on enemy positions. Modern Warfare utilizes this with easy to use, crisp clear communication and even takes it one step further by allowing you to eavesdrop on nearby enemies.
COD's controls are fast, responsive and simple. Call of Duty 4 allows players to carry two types of guns (most of the time, a side gun and a main gun), a knife, and two types of grenades as well as several other tools and weapons. You have a choice between different standard layouts for controls, some more traditional, while others for fans of different FPS's (like Halo for example) and you can choose your axis intensity or invert it all together. Something that is missing in this title is squad commands. Thanks to the eerily intelligent AI, your allies already know exactly what to do to help you out of a jam or press forward when your busy hiding behind a wall. Taking the controls of this game one step further, you have the ability to customize your player for online play. You can give your character specific guns, grenades, camouflage, and three perks such as more frag grenades, eavesdropping, and faster reload.
This game is by far the best army game I have ever played. It is not perfect however. This game would be utterly amazing if there was a four player co-op story mode, or even a two player co-op story mode. However since the game is pressing the limits of the next-gen systems, it seems you can only handle the chaos of war alone. When playing offline multiplayer, the graphics are scaled back a little and there are only a few modes of play. With no AI running around, it can get pretty lonely looking for your other friends. A second flaw of this amazing shooter is the length of the single player mode. The story can easily be completed in a weekend (but you won't be disappointed by the ending). Now onto the good stuff!
The game plays astoundingly. After a little bit of learning, training and testing, the game will feel like an extension of your body. The AI has been revamped and both enemies and allies are smarter than ever, not to say that every once in a while there might be a small glitch in their logic leaving them exposed or facing the wrong direction, but more often than not the enemies will team up and pin you down in a corner, then your allies will in one way or another find a way to help you out of the jam or maybe even win the war for you! Modern Warfare also tries to take into consideration the realism of army conflict. Depending on your distance, and the caliber of your gun, you can actually hit enemy targets behind cover. Since COD 4 has a large variety of modern realistic weapons, it's up to you to educate yourself on what gun to use for the specific occasion. At points you may take up a cannon on a helicopter but other than that, the game is without vehicles for you to control. This brings out the important role you play in the fight as you take down enemy tanks with your squad mates and infiltrate buildings. The game keeps itself fresh with a variety of mission types such as infiltration, intel gathering, saving allies, defending positions, assaulting enemy bases and so forth. You pretty much do everything one would think a super soldier would do and every minute of it is intense. The game can feel like an arcade shooter every now and then as it moves fast but still seems realistic overall. You can sprint to cover and hide to regenerate your health. A headshot or a couple of shots to the body usually takes you down though, as Kevlar and helmets don’t seem to do much in the way of protecting.
Once you complete the story mode, there are plenty of reasons to go back and play again. You can unlock cheats and an arcade mode that gives you a set of three lives and scores you per mission. You can also go back and try to find all the intel laptops strewn across the game to unlock new cheats (such as inverting gamma, cluster grenades and my personal favourite, olde tymer mode). As well, there's the basic yet fun offline multiplayer match set up.
Playing online is fun, playing online is challenging, playing online is addictive. You could pick up the controller, plug in your headset and play for hours. The game works on a ranking system in which you gain experience for kills and scenarios won. As you gain ranks not only does your title become cooler but you also unlock new perks and weapons to use. As you may be winding down a session, you hit a level, unlock a new gun or perk and decide to reconfigure one of your custom set-up slots. Along with new weapons for leveling up, there are challenges specific to your weapon, game mode, or skill as a player. These challenges can unlock things such as skins for your weapons, modifications for your guns (like scopes or silencers), or just give you a boost to your experience.
There are over ten modes to play online from death matches to team tactical matches to one on one cage matches. For whatever type of fight you're looking for, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare has you covered. Another interesting difference between this game and other online shooters is that you are rewarded for killing streaks. After three kills in a row without dying you can send out a UAV radar to see where opponents are, and this radar is shown to your entire team. After five kills you can call in an air strike to a specific location. After seven kills without dying you get an automatically piloted helicopter flying around picking off any enemy out in the open, and yes, these kills count as your own. Once you have reached the highest level of 55, unlocked all the perks, all weapons, finished all the challenges and got all the skins and scopes, you can enter prestige mode. This mode lets you trade in your rank, your experience, weapons, everything and start over again at level one, but with an insignia beside your name, letting everyone know you were once at a high level but are giving it all away to play with a challenge all over again. You can enter prestige mode up to ten times with different insignias each time.

Call of Duty 4 Tops 7 Million Units Worldwide, Labeled Best Selling Game of 2007
After tallying figures from sales tracking firms across the world, publisher Activision now claims that Infinity Ward's Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (PC, PS3, X360) was 2007's best selling game worldwide.
In all, the game sold in excess of 7 million units, according to data compiled from the NPD Group, Chart Track, and the GFK Group. Incredibly, that figure represents less than two whole months of sales, as the game deployed to stores in early November.
Of the overall figure, North American sales of the Xbox 360 version accounted for 3.04 million. The PC version, meanwhile, only sold 383,000 units at North American retailers, though that number does not include sales made through digital distribution platforms such as Steam.
Still, it's obvious that Infinity Ward is upset with the sales performance of the PC version, having already expressed amazement at the unexpectedly high level of piracy.
"This ground-breaking game and franchise continue to establish new standards by which all other action games will be judged," said Activision senior VP Will Kassoy. "Consumer and critics agree that Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare is one of the best games ever created and further establishes Call of Duty as one of the premier brands in the industry."
Call of Duty 4 coming to the Mac
Mac Modern Warfare should be available in May
One of the most enjoyed and popular FPS games of 2007 has been available for almost every other system -- PC, Nintendo DS, Playstation 3, and Xbox 360 -- so why not bring it to the Mac?
Publisher Aspyr has announced that the Mac version should be available in May.
"Featuring a tense storyline, filled with plot twists, the title thrusts players into battle like never before. With amazing special effects, including rim-lighting, depth of field, texture streaming and character self-shadowing, players are enlisted into one of the most photo-realistic gaming experiences imaginable," said the press release.
The game puts you in the shoes of special forces dudes from the S.A.S and U.S Marine core, and you fight "modern" style, with M4A1 rifles and nightvision goggles, against AK-47 wielding trouble-makers somewhere in the Middle East.
